Internship Semester 4
On Friday the 31st of May I had a semi busy day when it comes to preparation for Semester 4. I had a meeting via Teams with Nicole from the ICT & Education specialization where she told me a bit more about the semester and where I could ask some questions if I had any. For example the word "Data points" and "Portfolio" were mentioned a few times. But by asking about this I learned that the data points are essentially the learning outcomes we have this semester. They contain the following (these are not all of them but the ones mentioned in the conversation):
- - Preparing classes
- - A: Singular lessons
- - B: Multiple lessons
- - Interviewing a student
I could use the Monday and Friday to work on these data points
What's more is that the word portfolio popped up a few times. In here I have to, like semester 3, add all the data points I have gathered during the semester and add context to them. The only difference with this is that the portfolio has to be managed on canvas and not with our own website. This is because during the semester I won't be in a class with only IT students but also with students from economics for example.
Nicole, at the end of the conversation, sent me a guidebook on the specialization which I've been reading through. It's a lengthy, 17 page document but it's very informative and I've learned a lot from it so far. It contains pretty much everything I need to know before starting the semester.
As you can see on the image above, I spent a bit of time reading through it and also highlighting the most important bits.
At ROC Nijmegen
With this document, on the same day, I went to ROC Nijmegen to speak with an old teacher of mine with which I still had contact via LinkedIn. We sat together and talked for about an hour. A lot came up during the "interview". About how the institution works, what my daily business will look like, how ROC Nijmegen can help me with my learning goals and what they expect from me. Basically, I will be working at ROC Nijmegen 3 days out of 5. These are the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I can choose whether I want to teach year 1 or year 2 students but I am still free in this. I have also been told that I can go along with internships, but I still have to think about if this is a wise choice. So think about speaking with supervisors and students at the companies they have their internship at. My internship supervisor will be Bart Kuppeveld. He also did ICT & Media + the education specialization at Fontys. So he is familiar with the learning outcomes and what is expected. Finally, Bart asked me to think about what I want to teach and whether I think ROC Nijmegen can help me with this. I will give an answer before June 10th, but first I want to think about this and read through the file I received more thoroughly.
On the 8th of June I had finished thinking about what Bart had told me in person and I was ready to make a decision. I have called him to tell him that I'd love to teach students at ROC Nijmegen. And with this, Bart was going to start talking to the higher ups of the IT route at ROC Nijmegen to see if they could arrange a meeting with me. This will then be a sort of intake conversation to see if I'm a good fit for the school.
Conclusion / My Thoughts
I can say that I'm happily surprised with how well things have gone with the specialization process so far. I'm also very happy and grateful for the quick conversation Bart could hook me up with. I knew I couldn't just message him and see him the same day so I sent a message on the 29th to ask if I could see him after I had my teams meeting with Nicole. He responded the same day and with that it was settled.
