CMD methods

During our project we've been using the Double Diamond method. This is a framework of CMD methods that can be used during a project. Due to problems with our group and the group from Tilburg, we decided (after talking about it with Pim) to somewhat drop the double diamond method for the moment just to get on with the project. The diamond however has 4 stages.

Below you can find our initial planning of the AI Weirdness project. I've not included everything that was in the planning due to me not having part in some of the methods.

Our planning

Discover stage

The first part is the discover stage. During the discover stage, you research to gather information about the problem, its stakeholders, and the broader context. This research can include activities such as interviews, surveys, observations, and data analysis to uncover insights. The goal is to empathize with the users and understand their needs, motivations, and pain points.

Define stage

When you have gathered enough information about the problem, you start to define it. This involves synthesizing the research findings to identify patterns, themes, and opportunities. The team works to clearly articulate the problem or challenge in a way that aligns with the user's needs and the project's goals. The defined problem statement serves as a guiding light for the rest of the design process.

Change of course

From this point onward, we decided to change course a bit regarding the double diamond. Due to some uncertainties with our group, we decided to drop the double diamond from the point where we were. We thought of a new plan and decided to go with that. But thanks to time restrictions, we didn't have the time to fully implement it with the double diamond method. So al though we all know what it is and we do see the benefit of using it, we couldn't due to the time restriction.

Develop stage

In this stage, the focus shifts from divergent exploration to convergent decision-making. The team generates a wide range of ideas, concepts, and potential solutions to address the defined problem. Techniques such as brainstorming, ideation workshops, sketching, and prototyping are commonly used to explore different possibilities.

We did the following methods during our project:
  • Prototyping
I did the following outside of the project:
  • Prototyping

Deliver stage

Once a variety of solutions have been explored, the team evaluates, refines, and selects the most promising concepts to move forward with. This stage involves testing and iterating on prototypes to gather feedback from users and stakeholders. The goal is to refine the solutions based on user insights and make any necessary adjustments before finalizing the design.

Reflection

If I look back at the double diamond, I feel like it's a great way to get a project off the ground but only if you have time for it. I'll come back on this in LO5 / Passion project but if you only have a week or 2 to 3 to make a product for a client, you don't have the time to fully go through a double diamond.

In the future I'll definitely make it one of the go-to methods in the way I work.
